About the Project
Cooking Together is an initiative aiming to make a strong contribution to improve the self-confidence, employability and health and well being of participants – refugees and asylum-seekers living locally.
Cooking Together aims to do this by providing refugees with Level 2 Food Safety Training, which is essential for everyone who wants to work in a food environment.
Participants also receive nutritional and healthy eating advice to reduce dietary
related illness as well as healthy cooking skills.
Upon completion of the training, participants undertake practical experience in preparing, cooking and facilitating hot meals to different community groups across the city. This presents participants with the opportunity to put into practice the skills acquired, as well as to develop social contacts within other communities.
At the same time, by involving refugees and asylum-seekers in other communities, we seek to change attitudes and perception towards refugees and asylum-seekers.
Along the course, participants receive guidance and support to access further training as well as volunteering and employment opportunities.
Rupert Aikman, community nutritionist (BSc, MMedSci) and owner of Healthy Eating Solutions Ltd, is the CIEH Food Safety and Cooking Together’s Tutor.
Rupert is extremely passionate about promoting and demonstrating all aspects of nutrition and healthy eating. His primary goal is the conveyance of appropriate and personalised nutritional messages, which ultimately have a positive impact upon an individual’s lifestyle and wellbeing.
